Can you power wash a Hardie board?
If you live in Burlington, KY and your fiber cement siding looks grimy after a wet winter or pollen season, this is a common question. Short answer: yes, you can power wash Hardie board, but you need to do it carefully.
What Hardie board is and why it matters
Hardie board is a fiber cement siding. It is tougher than vinyl but not invincible. High pressure, a narrow nozzle, or holding the wand close to the surface can chip the finish, force water behind the siding, or damage caulking and trim. The trick is to clean it, not blast it.
How to power wash Hardie board safely
– Use low pressure. Keep the washer around 1,200 to 1,500 psi, not the 3,000 psi settings used for concrete.
– Pick the right nozzle. Use a wide fan nozzle like 25 or 40 degrees to spread the spray.
– Keep your distance. Hold the wand at least 8 to 12 inches from the siding and keep it moving.
– Angle the spray downward. Work from top to bottom so water runs down the board instead of being forced behind it.
– Don’t target seams and caulk lines. Avoid spraying directly into joints, windows, or where siding meets trim.
– Test first. Try a small, inconspicuous area to make sure the pressure and distance are safe.
– Use appropriate cleaners. Mild detergent or a siding cleaner works fine. Avoid harsh solvents or anything abrasive meant to strip paint.
– Protect landscaping and electrical outlets. Cover plants and any exterior fixtures that could be damaged.
When not to power wash
If the paint is peeling, the siding is old and brittle, or there is visible rot or failing caulk, skip the pressure washer. In those cases a gentler soft-wash or professional repair is a better option. Also do not use a pressure washer to remove paint unless you know what you are doing.
